My #1 Favorite First Stage Interview Question

An interview is a very short timeframe with a potential candidate in order for you as the hiring manager to the best of your ability assess THEIR capacity to fit in your team.

In my opinion there is more pressure on you as a hiring manager than the person interviewing for the role. You are the one buying an investment hoping for long term positive ROI(return on investment) while avoiding the stock you just bought from going bust in the short term.

So what’s the question?

“What question have I not asked you, you would have liked to be asked?”

Many of you now probably react to the open nature “carte blanche” of this question since interviews should be bloody gauntlets of impossible mind riddles asking about a bus’ capacity to store golfballs.

Thats wrong.

As a hiring manager you have the momentous task of making A decision from a pool of applicants to get the best person in for the job, and into a symbiotic team culture. You need to be able to see past interview situation nervousness and fuck ups, unless you are hiring someone to perform interviews all day.

When someone leaves an interview thinking “damn, if only they asked me this or if I could’ve highlighted that..” both the interviewer and the interviewee loses. As a hiring manager you need to make the right call, an incredible difficult task, and to do so sometimes you need to have the humility to swing the pendulum of control to the person you are interviewing.
